Dodik Drops Plans For Holding 2018 Republika Srpska Independence Referendum

Republika Srpska President Milorad Dodik, leader of the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats, said on Sept. 10 that he had abandoned plans to hold a referendum on independence of the Bosnian Serb entity.

President Dodik said that the referendum on the status of the Republika Srpska would be discussed at a later date, unless "some extreme conditions were created to make it possible."
The Alliance's assembly passed a declaration in 2015 heralding a referendum on Srpska's independence in 2018, which was strongly criticized by the international community.

President Dodik underlined that the referendum on the entity's status had been postponed "for later," lest it create a rift in RS's society.
