Support to Promoting and Protecting Media Freedom Project Overview

During the initial five months of the implementation of the media project SUPRO MEDIA – Support to Promoting and Protecting Freedom of the Media and Freedom of Expression in the Western Balkans, 11 multimedia stories on the topic and the key common challenges facing the journalistic profession in four countries of the region and in four languages were realized.

The project is realized by the Beta Media Center (BMC) and its partners – the BetaPress news agency from Belgrade, the KosovaLive media organization from Pristina, the Telma TV station from Skopje, and blogger Slobodan Vaskovic from Banjaluka.

In their multimedia pieces the partners tackled the attitude of the authorities toward journalists, the safety of journalists, and the issue of fake news, focusing on the specific aspects of the said topics in their respective societies with the purpose of analyzing the existing conditions and trends and exchanging experiences.

The production is made available to all interested parties in Serbian, Albanian, Macedonian and English at the project’s webpage, as well as at the websites and through other channels of the partners: at BETA’s website and through the agency’s services and news delivered to its clients, at the Kosova Live and websites, via the Telma TV’s information shows and at the station’s website, at Slobodan Vaskovic’s blog, as well as on the partners’ social networks.

The production from the project will be prepared until the end of August, with the goal to release a total of 24 multimedia features tackling freedom of the media in the countries of the region. After the project is completed, the public will be presented with its results and the conclusions on the situation in the journalistic profession in the region, along with recommendations as to how to create better conditions for the development of professional media and their work in the public interest.

The production is supported by the European Union and is part of the Protecting Media Freedom and Freedom of Expression in the Western Balkans program that is being realized by the Croation Journalist’s Association within the Regional Platform for Advocating Media Freedom and Journalists’ Safety in Western Balkans project. The latter is being implemented through partnership of six regional journalistic organizations: the Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia, the Association of Journalists of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Croatian Journalists’ Association, the Association of Journalists of Kosovo, the Association of Journalists of Macedonia, and the Media Trade Union of Montenegro.
